"W" Style & Modified Edge Form Combined

This aggressive yet versatile design can be very effective when properly implemented. It starts with a "W" style first pass where edge forming in the amount of fifty five to almost seventy degrees can be achieved. Normally the second pass in a "W" style set is only used to "flip" the reverse bend in the strip into a positive forming direction and not much else.

In this design however we sneak a little edge form (fifteen to twenty five degrees) into the second pass because the still open stance of the strip easily allows it. Again, this is an aggressive move and must be carefully implemented so that marking or scuffing doesn't occur.

ADVANTAGES of this design are:

  • A greater amount of metal is edge formed with the highest degree of mechanical advantage available on a tube mill.

  • Overall section height is greatly reduced going into the fin passes. On very light wall products buckling caused by edge stretching or lack of rigidity is greatly reduced.

  • Upper fin rolls will show less wear.

Some CONSIDERATIONS in the implementation of this design are:

  • On super heavy wall tubes pressure marking can occur in the second pass.

  • The mating edge form roll contours can only function properly over a very narrow range of material gauges. To cover a wide range of gauges additional top rolls are usually required.

  • First and second pass upper and lower roll alignment must be accurate.

  • Mill setup needs to be precise.

  • Flower and roll design must be correct or stepping and unevenness will appear in the tube surface.
